1. Automated
Fingerprint Identification System





Existing
security measures rely on knowledge-based approaches like passwords
or token-
based approaches such as swipe cards and passports to
control access to physical and virtual
spaces. Though ubiquitous,
such methods are not very secure. Tokens such as badges
and access
cards may be shared or stolen. Furthermore, they cannot differentiate
between
authorized user and a person having access to the tokens or
passwords.






Biometrics such as fingerprint, face and voice print offers means of
reliable personal
authentication that can address these problems and
is gaining citizen and government acceptance. Fingerprints were one
of the first forms of biometric authentication to be used for
law
enforcement and civilian applications. Contrary to popular belief and
despite decades
of research in fingerprints, reliable fingerprint
recognition is still an open problem. In this
project, we present
three specific contributions to advance the state of the art in this
field.





Reliable
extraction of features from poor quality prints is the most
challenging problem
faced in the area of fingerprint recognition. In
this project, we introduce a new approach for
fingerprint image
enhancement based on Short Time Fourier Transform(STFT) Analysis.
STFT is a well known time-frequency analysis technique to analyze
non-stationary signals.





In
this project, we extend its application to the analysis 2D
fingerprint images. The proposed


analysis
and enhancement algorithm simultaneously estimates several intrinsic
properties
of the fingerprint such as the foreground region mask,
local ridge orientation and local
frequency. Finally the projecty
will conclude with a userfriendly software developed in matlab for
the recognition of fingerprints, comparing it with a database of
fingerprints stored.





2. GPS Tool box for Matlab

    
    The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a burgeoning technology, which
provides unequalled accuracy and flexibility of positioning for
navigation, surveying and GIS data capture. The GPS NAVSTAR (Navigation
Satellite timing and Ranging Global Positioning System) is a
satellite-based navigation, timing and positioning system. The GPS
provides continuous three-dimensional positioning 24 hrs a day
throughout the world. The GPS uses satellites and computers to
compute positions anywhere on earth. The GPS is based on satellite
ranging. That means the position on the earth is determined by
measuring the distance from a group of satellites in space. The basic
principle behind GPS are really simple, even though the system employs
some of the most high-tech equipment ever developed.

    The GPS modules can be purchased from the local market easily. In general a GPS module has a serial port for interfacing with external world. The objective of this project is to develop a set of fuctions for controlling GPS module, fetching data from GPS module and plotting the data obtained. The project includes study of the system in detail, developing the functions in matlab standard format and documentation of the functions developed.




3. A generic approach for nesting of 2-D parts in 2-D sheets using genetic
                       and heuristic algorithms

































    In the present manufacturing scenario, cutting
of twodimensional (2-D) shaped parts from 2-D sheets, with a minimum
wastage of material, is an important task. Thet ask of arranging the
parts on the sheet, known as nesting,is being attempted by several
researchers employing severalmethods and implementing them using
digital computers. While developing the nesting methods for a given
set ofparts and sheets, one should consider certain geometrical and
technical aspects. The geometry of the parts to be cutmay vary from a
simple rectangular shape to a highly irregular one. In the case of
irregular parts, the geometry maycontain a straight line and
curvilinear features. Further, 2-D parts may also contain internal
features (either holes orcutouts) being regular or irregular in
geometry. In a similarmanner, the geometry of the sheet material can
vary fromregular to irregular shapes with or without defective
regions.




   In this project, a genetic and heuristic approach is proposed for the nesting of multiple two-dimensional (2-D) shaped parts in multiple 2-D shaped sheets with the aim of minimizing the wastage of the sheet material. The project proposes a new method of representing the sheet and part geometries in discrete form to arrange the parts on the sheet quickly, irrespective of the complexity in the geometry of the sheets and parts. The proposed heuristic approach considers the sheets and parts in a sequential manner and arranges the parts on the sheets using the bottom-left strategy. The genetic algorithm generates the best sequence of the sheets and parts for nesting the parts on multiple sheets, utilizing the sheet material optimally.





4. AUTOMATED OPTIMUM PATH DEVELOPMENT OF MOBILE ROBOT USING GENETIC-NEURO-FUZZY APPROACH
    
    Navigation and obstacle avoidance are very important issues for the successful use of an autonomous mobile robot. When the environment of the robot is obstacle free, the problem becomes less complex. But as the environment becomes complex, motion planning needs much treatment to allow the robot to move between its current and final configurations without any collision within the surrounding environment. The robot path is constrained by the partially-unknown movement of the moving obstacles known as uncluttered environments. Thus to generate collision free path of a car-like robot during its navigation among several moving obstacles it should have proper motion planning as well as obstacle avoidance scheme. This work deals with the determination of time-optimal, collision-free of a mobile robot using Neuro-fuzzy (NN-FLC) approaches. A fuzzy logic controller (FLC) is used to control the robot and the performance of the FLC is improved by using genetic algorithm (GA)-optimized NN-FLC. In the first approach, manually constructed FLC with author defined rules and membership function distributions are developed. In second approach, the rules and membership functions are optimized by using genetic algorithm. In the third approach, Orientation of the robot is also taken in to account for finding the optimal path and the problem of symmetry is solved in this approach. Two more condition variables derive_1 and derive_2 are fed as inputs the neruo-fuzzy network. In the fourth approach, Motion Planning of the mobile robot is developed by considering various dynamic constraints. In all the approaches, Takagi Sugeno method is used and the condition variables are expressed in terms of triangular membership functions. Five layer network is modeled with one hidden layer and learning algorithm (genetic) is used to determine the optimal rules and membership functions so that the robot will navigate in optimal collision-free path.



7. Automated Leukemia Diagnosis with Neurofuzzy Systems










Presently doctors are making decisions about diseases
using biopsy or other medical tests and medical images. Medical
images of cultured tissues are very difficult to manipulate using
naked eye and error probability in decision is very high. More over
two doctors may interpret the same image in two different ways. So we
are trying to realize a system to aid doctors in making decisions
very accurately using computer vision. More than one data mining
technique is used to increase the efficiency of the prediction
algorithm. Fractal analysis, mean and variance in spatial domain as
well as spectral domain are used for data mining. Artificial neural
network and fuzzy logic is used to predict the disease. A self
learning capability is given to the system to increase the accuracy.
Genetic algorithm is used for this purpose. The system is implemented
in MATLAB.



















8. stereo photography





    These
days we think of photographs as two diamensional objects. The reason
is that we always think of photographs on paper. With the advent of
computers and digital cameras, now we have started thinking about and
infact started using digital images. Thesee days we view images in
computer.





    In a
two diamensional photographs a pixel is associated with two
cordingtes x and y ie P(x,y). But in a three dimensional photograph,
a picture has to be associated with three co-ordinates , ie P(x,y,z).
A digital camera is digitising image from a two diamensional sensor
array and hence the normal still camera can not fetch information
about the third dimension (depth).





Humans
have two eyes located side-by-side in the front of their heads. Each
eye takes a view of the same area from a slightly different angle.
The two eye views have plenty in common, but each eye picks up visual
information the other doesn't. Each eye captures its own view and
the two separate images are sent on to the brain for processing. When
the two images arrive simultaneously in the back of the brain, they
are united into one picture. The mind combines the two images by
matching up the similarities and adding in the small differences. The
small differences between the two images add up to a big difference
in the final picture. The combined image is more than the sum of its
parts. It is a three-dimensional stereo picture.





The
objective of this project is to develop and implement an algorithm
which upon receiving two images( steriao images) calculates the
corresponding 3d image. The inputs to the developed program are two
numbes of 2-D images of same scene but from different angles. Let's
say P1(x,y) and P2(x,y). The output is a 3-D image P(x,y,z) and
which can be viewed using a 3-D grph like plot3d in matlab. The
programmig language to be used is matalab.



The
proposed technology can be used in


  1. Robotics:
    Robots can calculate obstacles on its path


  2. Satellite
    imaging: The topology of the earth surface can be calculated from
    two images taken at two different angles by the satellite.


  3. Entertainment:
    3-D photo albums in computer.

linux live usb

we can easily create a live usb using UNetbootin. use the following procedure in creating a live usb

open terminal and type

wget http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-linux-latest

to download the bin file of unetbootin

make it executable by typing

chmod u+x unetbootin-linux-313

you have to install p7zip for the proper working of the software

sudo apt-get install p7zip-full

now type:

sudo ./unitbootin-linux-313
to start the application. look at the screen shot


you can select the distro given in the drop down menu if you don't have the iso of the distro. it will be automatically downloaded from the corresponding website.

it will be better to choose the next option if you have the iso file of the distro. pls enter the path to the iso file.

plug the pendrive to the usb port and select ok, after a few minutes, depending on the size of your distro, it will be installed to the pendrive.

reboot and boot from the usb. here it goes.........

light window manager for ubuntu FVWM-crystal

i am having an old laptop in which i want to install a relatively new OS. I tried openSUSE, ubuntu, kubuntu etc.
but the problem is, my laptop is getting heated up like a furnace. so i need a light OS. So i tried xubuntu 8.04. still the problem persists even though the heating is reduced.

so i googled for a light window manager and got FVWM-Crystal.

following are the procedure to be followed in installing it in ubuntu.

open terminal and type

sudo apt-get install fvwm imagemagick rox-filer\
 xscreensaver trayer gksu aterm habak mpd mpc

then download the crystal package

wget http://download.gna.org/fvwm-crystal/3.0.4/fvwm-\
crystal-3.0.4.tar.gz


untar it

tar xvzf fvwm-crystal-3.0.4.tar.gz

install the crystal package

cd fvwm-crystal-3.0.4
sudo make install

copy the addons

sudo cp addons/fvwm-crystal.desktop /usr/share/xsessions/

and logoff and change session to fvwm-crystal

Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

In some laptops for example HP Pavilion dv4-1123us with intel 82801l HD audio controller, each and every tone made is repeated 5 to 6 times. This can be handled by using the following steps.


type in terminal........

gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Then add the following to the end of the file:

options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1


and restart the laptop. The problem will be fixed.

grub re-installation after windows installation

it is very simple to re-install the grub after the windows installation. just follow the steps given below.

  • boot the system from a live cd
  • open terminal
  • type sudo grub
            you will get a new prompt showing
                  grub>
  • type the following commands in this prompt
  • find /boot/grub/stage1
             you will get an output such as
                grub>(hd0,3)
  • root (hd0,3)
                you have to use the output of the previous command here
  •   setup (hd0)
            this will install grub in your boot loader
  • now type exit to go out of the grub prompt
  • reboot the system, your grub will be restored. if there is any problem pls comment here.

setting wifi in ubuntu for dell vostro 1400 with dell wireless card

there is no specific wifi card driver in ubuntu 8.04 for dell vostro 1400. so we have to install the windows driver with ndiswrapper. but ndiswrapper can only be used in terminal. so we have to install the gui version named ndisgtk.

following are the steps in installing these things

  1. open synaptic package manager
  2. search ndisgtk. if it is found then skip the steps 3 to 7
  3. if not found open settings>Repositories
  4. open the tab Third-party software
  5. select the two items and close the window
  6. press ctrl+r
  7. after completing the download, search for ndisgtk
  8. select it and press ctrl+p to download it
  9. after installing, close synaptic package manager
  10. download this link and save the file in a folder.
  11. now open terminal and go to the newly made folder
  12. type unzip and press tab button to show an .exe name and press enter
  13. now type sudo ndisgtk. you have to type the password here
  14. press install new driver and browse to the driver folder inside our newly made folder
  15. open the 32 bit folder or 64 bit folder as your ubuntu 32/64 bit
  16. select the inf file found there
  17. press install
  18. close ndisgtk
  19. type sudo iwlist scanning
  20. most probably you will get the wifi connectivity

  1. connect the wire from the modem to the computer
  2. open terminal
  3. enter password where ever needed
  4. type wvdialconf. some commands can be seen now
  5. now type sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
  6. add 172222 after phone = (if you are using bsnl connection)
  7. set user name and password as your landline number with code
  8. save the file
  9. now type wvdial and you will be connected to the internet

increase screen resolution in ubuntu 8.04

i here by noticed my friend nithin's pc which is working on ubuntu 8.04 hardy has got low resolution. its maximum resolution is just 800 x 600. so i googled how to increse the resolution and now got good resolution of 1200 x 728 at 50Hz.


Following are the steps to be followed

  2. now take the backup of the original xconf.org by typing the following command in terminal

    sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup.1

  3. now move the new file to the required location by typing the following command in terminal

    sudo mv /home/'ur username'/Desktop/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  4. now press ctrl+alt+backspace for kernal restart

  5. login back and open system => preference => screen resolution

    select the resolution you wanted and press apply

  6. if you cant read any thing with this resolution (usually such things doesn't happens), press alt+ctrl+F1 to enter the text mode

  7. type sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup.2

    sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup.1 /etc/X11/xorg.conf

  1. Press Alt+Ctrl+F1.
  2. Enter the login detail.
  3. Enter sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
  4. Enter sudo Xorg -configure
  5. The new xorg.conf file xorg.conf.new will be created in the home folder.
  6. Back up the original xorg.conf file
    sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bkup1
  7. Copy the new xorg file to /etc/X11/
    sudo cp ~/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
  8. Start gdm
    sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start

wifi and dialup modem for compaq presario c700

one of kake's friend mr. siju came to ascent for installing ubuntu last month. kake installed gutsy in his lap. but gutsy does not support many drivers for compaq presario. many things like wifi, dialup modem etc may not work with this installation. so he came again for installing these drivers along with some other softwares.

hence i installed hardy heron in his lap. but the driver problem still persists. even wifi cannot be configured. i googled this error and understood the problem is with the restricted hardware driver atheros hardware access layer.

to install the wifi driver for this laptop, follow the following steps.
  1. open system>administration>hardware drivers
  2. deselect atheros hardware access layer (HAL)
  3. now download this link
  4. extract this file by right clicking it
  5. open synaptic and ensure the build-essential is installed
  6. open terminal and cd to the extracted folder
  7. type sudo make clean
  8. type make
  9. type make-install
  10. type modprobe ath_pci
  11. reboot the system
follow the steps described below for installing the dialup modem

  1. download alsa driver
  2. run it by double clicking
  3. download hsfmodem driver
  4. extract this file
  5. run the extracted file
  6. script in terminal sudo gedit /etc/wvdial.conf
  7. add 172222 after phone =
  8. set user name and password as your landline number with code
  9. save and close the gedit window
  10. type wvdial to get connected to network

matlab robot

i got a mini project to be guided on the topic remote controlled robot from the mes college of engg. but the students told me that they want to do a different project which must be noticed even though the IR remote controlled devices are very common project.

hence i discussed it with kake. kake told me to avoid the remote part and interface the robot with a PC via serial port. i was afraid since i only know the serial communication using the turboC which has many tedious works to be done.

kake suggested me to try with matlab which has a lot of toolboxes. he was sure there will be toolbox for serial communication via serial port.

i googled with the hope to complete the project at least in one month. but i got a set of statements with we can transmit a single byte or even a file itself serially

so tried with sending some byte of data for each action to takeplace such as '0' for forward motion, '1' for turning left, '2' for turning right and '3' for stopping all actions.

the code was having just 8-10 lines and i made it in conditioned infinite loop. if i am entering any byte other than the mentioned one the program will exit.

in the robot side i used a microcontroller AT89C52 to control the motion of the robot. it can serially communicate with the outside if the communication is in CMOS logic. but the RS232 is TTL logic which won't respond with our microcontroller. so we have to use a new ic to convert TTL logic to CMOS and vice versa.

to avoid data loss we have to assign a fixed baud rate at the transmitter side and at the receiver side. the baud rate i used is 4800 bps

i programmed the microcontroller to frequently check for the reception of data. on the basis of the received bit, i switched the control to different operations as already mentioned.

but the difficulty with this was, we have to type each byte inside single quotations. for example while the robot is traveling at any edges, we want to stop the robot, we type '4' and press enter. this will take some time and the robot may fall down. my students also requested to make the program larger. so i went for using GUI in matlab.

it was very simple to make GUI in matlab using guide command. i made five buttons namely forward, left, right, stop and close. while we press the any button the corresponding byte will be serially sent to the robot. close is used to close the GUI window.

Maxima, a Computer Algebra System

Maxima is a free computer algebra system based on a 1982 version of Macsyma. It is written in Common Lisp and released under the GNU General Public License and runs on all platforms such as Unix, BSD, and Linux as well as under Microsoft Windows.

Maxima is a system for the manipulation of symbolic and numerical expressions, including differentiation, integration, Taylor series, Laplace transforms, ordinary differential equations, systems of linear equations, polynomials, and sets, lists, vectors, matrices, and tensors.

I got the idea of maxima while attending the class of Mr. Deepak sir of NITC in last foss meet. Now i am using it usually. try to use it find the power of maxima.

you can download maxima from this link. you can use windows installer for using in windows and for linux/mac you have to compile the sourcecode which can be downloaded from the same page.

but the problem with maxima is that it has no graphical user interface. if you have any difficulties in using maxima in the terminal, there comes a derivative of maxima called wxmaxima which has got the GUI interface.

you can download the windows version of wxmaxima from here.
to have the linux version you can either use synaptic or download the sourcecode from here and compile it.
